I never reviewed Saint’s Row 2. That surprises me. I played it but I never actually wrote a review on a game that was, in many ways, what Grant Theft Auto 4 should have been like. Well, I will be reviewing Saint’s Row: The Third, but for now here’s my first opinions.

Saint's Row: The Third

This is not a hard-boiled action/drama like GTA4 was. This is a ludicrously over the top action extravaganza, where what the player feels like doing takes precedence over what the player realistically should be able to do. I once ran a car at high speed over a ramp, bailed the apex of the jump and parachuted down from the flying car into a pack of rival gang members, guns blazing. Reality says what I did can’t be done. Saint’s Row: The Third says it was fun and looked cool, so it’s just fine with it. The characters are mostly obscene jerks and the game is about a –9.5 on the politically correct scale but it is fun. Flying is a pain in the ass, though, and driving could use some tightening up – but I do like being able to use the hood of a low-riding oncoming car as a makeshift jump ramp.

There’s not a serious bone in SR:TT’s body, and I’m actually ok with that. My full review will be up in the coming weeks.

I’ve been played SR3 for quite a bit and I love it. I do wonder how flying is a pain in the ass for you since it’s really easy. No trouble with it at all. Same with driving, it’s all good with me. Only downside I found in this game was that co-op can only be done with 1 extra player. Would have been nice if more was possible, but yeah.. Cool game is cool.

It’s entirely possible my mouse sensitivity was my problem with flying. I’ll have to test that out. Driving is fun but just a little floaty so it’s not a bad thing.

The only thing I really use the mouse for when flying is looking around/aiming and firing mounted weapon.
I don’t know how you fly, but for me it’s W,A,S and D for going forward, strafing left, going backward and strafing right. And for ascending and descending I use Shift and Ctrl (usually the left ones). And that is for helicopter style flying. Planes are a bit different. There you use W to go up, S to go down and A and D to steer.
The Vtol aircrafts can switch between modes… and are freaking powerful.

Unrelated question: how the hell do I change avatar? Couldn’t find the option anywhere.

It is the aiming that I struggle with the most. As for avatars, they’re currently handled by Gravatar. I’m looking into a local solution.

Ok, I now have rudimentary a local avatar system in place. You should see it in your profile.

Yep, it works. And you’ll get the hang of the aiming. In helicopters, it’s pretty easy. Then again, I’m already able to fly helicopters properly in GTA, and the GTA games have about the shittiest helicopter controls that you can have on PC.
