Here’s short story series of Omega (known as Floata in-game) and I attempting a variation on the Minecraft Experiment, as done by one Tom Francis of PC Gamer. Our goal, like his, was to go to the Nether, go as far as we could, build a portal and then find our way home. We’re not nearly as good as he is so, things didn’t go quite as planned.
We began with some starter gear; iron chest and leg armor, a few pickaxes, a sword, a bow with a stack of arrows, flint and steel and a pile of food. Off we go!
The nether has never looked inviting, but we have a goal. We step through the purple aegis and are instantly spawned in a small cobblestone room I’d built. Why a cobblestone room? There were four or five frickin’ ghasts our there and I wanted to give us a fighting start, ok? Sheesh.
We opted to burrow for a short and avoid the ghast-heavy surface. We, as we planned, took turns digging. It wasn’t long though before we broke out over wide open lava.
Yeah, that ain’t good. What made matters worse was the presence of a ghast.
“Archers, form up!” We shot a half dozen arrows each at him but never made contact with his albino hide.
Omega was hell bent on killing the damned thing though. We opted to go to the surface nearby and fight it in the open. We did manage to finish it off. Shortly thereafter, Omega had the brilliant idea to piss of the pigmen.
Or maybe they just wanted to play.
Nope, no.. they definitely wanted to kill him. I jumped in to help and we lived. After that it was back to digging. I had a preset direction I wanted to go, but there was solid wall in the way. Omega’s never been one to let that stump him. Dig! Dig like you mean it!
And so we did. We dug. And we dug. And we dug.
And we dug.
Finally we emerged in a huge cave. It was at this point that the whole go-one-direction thing got scrapped, as we just headed towards the coolest looking areas instead. Yup, we were nether tourists.
“… and here’s a postcard from our trip to the nether. Wish you were here!”
We crested a ridge and got set upon by a horde of pigmen that Omega ticked off. I attacked them to help when a ghast made his intentions known: I was not welcome here.
Well, guess what?
I ain’t that happy to see him, either!
Bam! Drop dead, sucker.
We’re doing really well so far. How far will we make it? Find out on Wednesday.
