Portal 2’s level editor is out, and I had to try it. Let’s see if I can make a working test chamber.

Portal 2

Well, it’s easy enough to find. Let’s open it up and look at it, shall we?

Portal 2

Ok yeah, we’ve all seen this. Time to mod it up and see what I can make.

Portal 2

Here’s my first test chamber. I like faith plates and flinging, so this one is designed to ling you to the far angled platform, where you portal to the other angled platform in midair to launch to the far side of the room and the door. Let’s try it.

Portal 2

You just click a button and you’re off.

Portal 2

Loading…

Portal 2

Aha! There it is, my first test chamber.

Portal 2

So I just step on this plate…

Portal 2

… and use the (difficult to see) angled plates to fling myself across the room.

Portal 2

I missed the distant platform. In fact, I missed it something like 9 of 10 tries, and the one I made it, I didn’t get enough speed to reach the far side of the room. Ok, let’s rethink this.

Portal 2

Here’s my remake. You point a laser (not visible here) into a receptacle (which you can see here) to drop a ball that you put into the hole on the far platform near the door. Let’s try it.

Portal 2

Loading again.

Portal 2

There’s the new chamber. Anyone see a flaw?

Portal 2

Portal 2

I first put the laser guiding portals up before I noticed the flaw in the above picture.

Portal 2

I could just portal to the open space above the door and bypass the faith plate. Crap.

Portal 2

Yup, too easy.

Portal 2

Edit, load again.

Portal 2

Crap, now I noticed that I can just jump to the faith plate, bypassing the lasers AND the ball. Arrrgh.

Portal 2

Here’s my (hopefully) final design. I can’t jump to the faith plate. I can’t portal to the door. The lasers activate the ball and the portable space above the ball chamber. Let’s try it.

Portal 2

I am starting to hate these loading screens.

Portal 2

Good, I can’t jump that distance anymore.

Portal 2

There’s the working laser.

Portal 2

Oh. I closed the platform with the laser, instead of opening it. Oops.

Portal 2

After a reload, I get the lasers to open the platform. I tried portaling to it but moving my portal blocked the laser and closed the platform. AARRGH!! One more change, and I was able to make the platform close while the laser is connected but open back up when it was broken. I put the ball where it belonged, went back to the now-raised platform, and finally stepped on the faith plate.

Portal 2

Yes! I works! I made a quick clip of myself solving it to show how it works.

And that’s how the new test chamber creation tool works, more or less. I wish you more luck then I had. You can try this one out for size here. (edit: The Steam Workshop is having issues, deleted my test chamber, and won’t allow me to republish it or anything else. Many others are having the same issue. I may cover that here if it keeps up) (edit again: The link is live again. They fixed the problem)

Alphasim out.
