I once did a preview of FTL (Faster Than Light), and now that it’s out I wanted to do a series of play throughs before my review. Here is the first one.
This is my initial layout. You can see my custom crew in the bottom left, with Bub, Lug and Bea, the token female. They board The Quest, on a quest to survive. What will do them in first; direct combat with an alien force beyond their comprehension, or my clumsy play style? Yeah… let’s start this on ‘easy.’
Here we are, in space. The final frontier. You can see that Lug is set to man the weapons. Sticking crew members to man a particular system nets them experience in that system which can result in bonuses to that system’s performance.
Similarly, Bea is manning (or womanning, as it were) the engines. We meet (and destroy) two ships before crossing our first store.
Wow, I want it all! In the end I repair the ship, buy some missiles and buy the shield recharge booster.
Then next ship I cross sets one of my rooms on fire. I ultimately have to send Bea to med bay while Lug finishes putting out the fire.
My next jump finds me this. Being the good space captain I am, we aid the Federation vessel.
We’ve been boarded! Valeriya has boarded our ship and it takes the combined efforts of Lug and Bea to put her down. In the mean time, I take our their teleporter and weapons systems.
Yea! Much better. To this point I haven’t been challenged by much of anything. My next jump takes me into a nebula, which I am told will cripple my sensors.
I take the cowardly route this time and opt to skip combat. I manage to slip away from him and jump to another nebula that’s one jump from the first exit.
Crap. I get boarded by a whole bunch of well-armed baddies.
Bea and Bub are quickly slaughtered while Lug escapes to an empty room.
He manages to slip into the damaged med bay undetected. Now to see if he can get it fixed enough to use it.
Nope, the mob found him. He lasted a scant few seconds before succumbing to their fire.
Well that sucked. I didn’t even make it out of the first system. I’ll be back though with another play through soon enough, and I promise I’ll do better.
