Mojang is pushing ahead with Minecraft, and their next patch is heavily focusing on biome types. With the first snapshot out for testing, I thought we should take a look at what’s coming.

First up, the so-called flower forest, so named because, well… look at it. Mojang added a slew of new flowers and apparently want to show them off so bad that they get a biome dedicated to them.

Sunflowers are also new, and likewise they get a biome named for themselves, called sunflower plains. Apparently they always face east and can therefore be used for navigation.

Roofed forests also new, and I like these allot.  The trees are bigger and denser, covering most of the area in shadows dark enough to spawn mobs. You can also find giant mushrooms in this biome.

Oceans are still huge, and deep ocean biomes are just that: very deep oceans.

The savanna biome features these bent, branched trees. The single-branch ones look a little odd but the multi-branch trees look really nice.

I was strolling through this savanna when I saw a waterfall. I looked up and saw this.

Ok, wow. That’s really different. I know that Mojang added an ‘amped’ world setting that makes for dramatic verticality in terrain, but I’m not using that setting. In fact, I can’t – Minecraft crashes whenever I use it.

It appears that horse types now spawn in groups, as evidenced by this herd of donkeys, reminding me of Captain Derp-Face, my donkey I tamed while looking into patch 1.6.

Mesa biomes are the big ‘tada’ biome, and while it’s a nice change – and a source for hardened clay – it makes me crave a proper canyon biome.

Patch 1.7 is still a long ways off, and other features I haven’t touched on, including fishing improvements, are coming along as well. Are you excited for anything in particular in 1.7?
