I never reviewed Saint’s Row 2. That surprises me. I played it but I never actually wrote a review on a game that was, in many ways, what Grant Theft Auto 4 should have been like. Well, I will be reviewing Saint’s Row: The Third, but for now here’s my first opinions.
This is not a hard-boiled action/drama like GTA4 was. This is a ludicrously over the top action extravaganza, where what the player feels like doing takes precedence over what the player realistically should be able to do. I once ran a car at high speed over a ramp, bailed the apex of the jump and parachuted down from the flying car into a pack of rival gang members, guns blazing. Reality says what I did can’t be done. Saint’s Row: The Third says it was fun and looked cool, so it’s just fine with it. The characters are mostly obscene jerks and the game is about a –9.5 on the politically correct scale but it is fun. Flying is a pain in the ass, though, and driving could use some tightening up – but I do like being able to use the hood of a low-riding oncoming car as a makeshift jump ramp.
There’s not a serious bone in SR:TT’s body, and I’m actually ok with that. My full review will be up in the coming weeks.
